Govt denies there is any such plan. CNC alleges that Govt is trying to fool the public.
The CNC (Codava National Council) has launched an agitation against the Govt plan to divert the “Kongana River in Coorg to Bangalore city”. Some news reports had claimed that to solve the water problem of bangalore, the Govt was planning to interlink two rivers in Coorg and divert the river all the way to Bangalore.
DNA news had quoted the Irrigation Minister Mr.Basavaraj Bommai stating;
“To meet the ever-growing demand for drinking in Bangalore city, we are planning to get eight thousand million cubic feet (tmc) of water from Honganahole (Kongana Pole), near Ponnnampet in Virajpet taluk, It has 103 sq km catchment area. We are planning to first bring water to Lakshmana Theerta and then to Bangalore through pipes”.
CNC has accused the state govt of fooling the people of Coorg. CNC has also alleged that one prominent politician from Coorg is hand in gloves with the state govt on the project.
CNC has threatened to further the agitation and not allow any survey to be taken out for the project in Coorg warning that the dam will doom the lives of thousands of people in Coorg and it is ploy to build a small dam first to expand it later at the wish and whim of the Govt.
MLA from Virajpet and the Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah, has also denied any such project is on the cards.
CNC is bang on target. Bommai has again made a U-Turn. Seems he is hell bent on building the dam. https://www.hindu.com/2010/07/08/stories/2010070854430300.htm
On July 1st he confirmed that the plans were true.
But why is CNC becoming a torch bearer in this issue. Are our MLA’s sleeping. Thier silence riles…….
