A delegation from Kodagu submitted a memorandum to Pratap Simha, MP, at his office at Jaladarshini Guest House on Hunsur Road here today urging the MP to impress upon the Centre to drop the project.
The delegation, comprising Manu Somaiah of Save Cauvery Trust, power line specialist Dr. Shankar Sharma, Col. K.T. Muthanna of Cauvery Water Life Society, Ashwath Raje Urs of Raitha Sangha and Ganapathy, a leader from Kerala, appraised Simha about the detrimental factors of the project drawing the 400 kv HT power line from Kaiga near Karwar to Kerala through Kodagu. They pointed out that lakhs of trees were being felled in Kodagu and Kerala to facilitate that project which may affect the rainfall and dry up river Cauvery eventually.
They suggested that alternatively the power line could be drawn across the sea coast or the existing route through H.D. Kote. They did not rule out pressure from timber lobby to make sure that the line passes through Coorg.
Pratap Simha assured to do the needful and discuss the issue with Central Ministers.
Accident
Meanwhile, Cauvery Sene Convenor Ravi Chengappa, a member of the delegation, could not make it for the meeting as the car he was travelling met with a small accident near Kushalnagar and got held up. It is learnt from the other members of the delegation that Ravi was not hurt.
