Vijaya, the cow-elephant camping at the Dubare Elephant Camp of the Forest Department near here has given birth to a female calf recently. Vijaya, aged 56 years, has so far given birth to 12 calves. This calf is healthy, measuring about 30 kgs.
Vijaya, who had been participating in the Mysore Dasara festival since the past six years, will give a miss this Dasara as she will be taking care of her baby, under the supervision of Mahout Bojappa and Kavadi Doreyappa.
The little elephant calf has brought joy not only to the elephant caretakers but to the children of the tribal settlement who play with the calf every day.
Mythili, also a resident of the elephant camp, had delivered a calf a few days ago. Now the number of elephants in the camp has risen to 23, including Vijaya’s baby.
