High Court: Animals should live in their natural habitat and it is up to humans to adjust

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

The State Govt plan to mitigate the man-elephant by trans-locating the elephants from Coorg & Hassan to the forests near Bangalore has been turned down by the High Court. The high court said;

“Animals should live in their natural habitat and it is up to humans to adjust. ”

The Govt has been instructed to seek advise from experts in India & Africa before they plan for such an exercise.

The past decade has seen a drastic rise in man-elephant conflict in Hassan & Coorg.  Elephants entering farms and plantations has been a common sight in many parts of Coorg. Encroachment by humans of reserve forest, pysari land and revenue forest near their villages, which the elephants had been foraging for long, has only escalated the conflict.

According to the last census 260 elephants were counted in Virajpet circle and 245 in Madikeri. Nagarhole National Park had a maximum of 792 elephants and a minimum of 443 elephants with a mean population of 617 elephants.

Environmentalists come together to clear the air on UNESCO World Heritage site

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Environmentalists from different organisations have come together on a common forum to clear the air on UNESCO World Heritage Site after the fiasco during the visit of the IUCN officials.

They have addressed the following points contrary to what certain political and non-political  organisations opposed to the UNESCO world heritage site feel about the proposal;

  1. Only the State governments in the country which have the right to decide on policies pertaining to land acquisition and revenue matters.
  2. The proposal is confined to three thick forests and two reserve forests and the legal rights of the people living in these areas and on the borders will not be taken away.
  3. The report submitted by the Centre to UNESCO has not made any mention on curbing the rights of the citizens of using the land for agriculture, coffee production, pasture, road laying etc.
  4. This is the proposal of the Central government and not of the environmentalists.
  5. The idea was including the Western ghats in the world heritage list was the dream of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.
  6. If the sanctuaries are included in the Hertiage List, it will help to solve the Man-Elephant Conflict in Coorg.
  7. Those who are opposed to the proposal are supposedly politically motivated with vested interest to do so.

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

The Govt of India has declared the elephant as India’s national heritage animal, by doing so establishing the elephants importance in India over the centuries.

The minister for environment, Mr.Jairam Ramesh had stated that;

The elephants have been a part of Indian culture since ages and there was a need to accord the status to the animal.

Coorg and many other places has been reeling under Man-Elephant conflict since large tracts of forest land have been encroached or cultivated or being utilized for development projects like Hydel Power.

The Elephant Task Force constituted by the government has said that the special status will help the elephant be better protected.

It can be cruel irony that as the news about the status came in and rejoiced conservationists, an elephant fell into the pond in a cardamon estate in Kerala and died.
