Will Appachu’s loyalty pay…. at least this time?Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010Be it politically or development wise….Coorg getting a raw deal by the State Govt every time has been a buzz word in Coorg since long. Tomorrow will be another Cabinet expansion of the BJP Govt in Karnataka. And our 3 Time MLA and loyal man of BJP in Coorg-Appachu Ranjan and his followers should be waiting with baited breath. Though his credentials speak for himself, the poster boy and strong man of BJP in Coorg has been successively ignored by the top brass of state BJP unit for a ministerial berth. Appachu has never hidden his desire for a ministerial berth, he and his followers have used every tactic in the book to bring to notice of the State Govt – about the same….., from threatening to bring BJP down in Coorg , resigning , even wooing CM Yeddyurappa with theertha & flowers. The last time he missed the ministerial bus Appachu blamed BJP Leaders of plotting against him and lamented that though he is behind the rising star of BJP in Coorg, he has always been sidelined in the name of this-or-that. When he met Yedduryappa after missing the ministrial berth he made his disappointment clear to him. At that time Yeddyurappa said;
Yeddyurappa tried to pacify Appachu with a political secretary post. During the recent Defection Crisis…Appachu once again got a chance to prove that he is one of the most loyal member of BJP and cannot be bought over with loads of cash or a ‘promise’ of ministerial berth which has been denied to him time and again by the BJP. Kumaraswamy for his overtures got a ‘no’ plus the CD scam. Just when the BJP in Coorg are optimistic and have their fingers crossed, our ex-law minister and JDS Strongman M.C.Nanaiah jumped into the Cabinet Expansion Ring with a legal salvo & advice on constitutional mathematics , at the same time supporting Appachu for his dues. CMC – Lung space around Madikeri to be protectedWednesday, September 22nd, 2010The City Muncipal council (CMC) meeting held on Tuesday 14th September resolved to preserve and protect the green cover provided by the urban forests in and around Madikeri town limits. The meeting further resolved, unanimously to evict encroachers of the hill side and government lands which were posing a risk to the ecology and also was an eyesore. The meeting which was held under the Presidentship of CMC President P.D. Ponnappa was attended by Madikeri MLA Appachu Ranjan and MLC M.C. Nanaiah and all councillors. ![]() M C Nainaiah with CMC officials at one of the disputed site which was squatted upon and illegally sold. CMC President has assured that the illegal encroachments will be removed and criminal cases will be filed against the encroacher and culprits dealing in such encroachments. The MLC felt that land grabbers from within the district and from out side have ganged up to encroach on government lands in Madikeri to construct houses and resorts. The modus operandi of the encroachers is to squat on revenue land and after a period of time to apply for regularization. The MLA instructed the CMC Commissioner to identify genuine homeless and land less individuals and provide them homes under the ‘Navagrama’ yojane, five km away from the city limits. Social forestry projects should be undertaken in the recovered areas to retain the green cover around the city felt M.C. Nanaiah. The issues dear to People of CoorgTuesday, August 3rd, 2010By: I K Anil, CLN M.C.N. has written to the CM on all pertaining matters, dear to the people of Coorg. He further, has stated that despite drawing the CM s attention on the floor of the house, nothing substantial has been done on these burning issues. I am sure, that though the comments are from the leader of the opposition in the council, they should be taken seriously by the ruling party, failing which, BJP can wish this bastion goodbye. Kodagu has been sympathetic towards the BJP despite the fact, that the BJP was not ruling at the centre nor the state, at that point in time. When I heard the CMs address at the State Journalist’s Meet, held at Madikeri in December 2009, I was convinced that he had a special place for the people of Kodagu. However, I presume, present Karnataka politics has kept him pre -occupied. The onus of presenting Kodagu’s case, of solving Jamma Bane, Man animal conflict, tree rights and roads rests solely with our esteemed elected representatives, who should be proactive in representing the burning issues, with the powers that be. The Kodagu police under the able guidance of SP Manjunath Annegeri has mobilised and activated the cadres to a nicety. The recent car jacking is one of the many crimes, his team has nipped in the bud. The results are there not only because of his ability, but the fact he has not been transferred within a year, like thirteen of his predecessors, who have not held office for more than six months. We do hope, the government according to their policy, will not transfer able officers before the stipulated three year period . The Tree preservation meet at Bangalore to amend the species of trees to be felled with out permission, is a step in the right direction. Farmers will benefit if more species are brought under this list. The environmentalists can be rest assured that the farmers will plant more of these species felled, as an insurance for their future. Today the trend is to plant only silver oaks, as this species can be felled without prior permission. MCN: Solve Pending Issues of KodaguTuesday, August 3rd, 2010Urges CM to not pay lip service. Madikeri : MLC M.C. Nanaiah addressed a press conference in Madikeri and urged the Chief Minister to convene a high-level meeting of people’s representatives to solve the contentious issues plaguing the District. Nanaiah, who addressed the media recently, released a copy of his letter to the Chief Minister which listed the four major issues that needed immediate attention-wild elephant menace, felling of trees, withdrawal of circular on Jamma land and erratic power cuts. Nanaiah stated that the Chief Minister had replied to the issues he raised in the Legislative Council, but nothing seems to have been done as the problems continue. Nanaiah felt that inspite of raising vital issues the wild elephant menace continues unabated.He was very critical of K.B. Markendeya, former conservator of forests of Kodagu circle, who had written a objectionable letter to the DC stating that the “Jamma” lands which were converted into agricultural lands was violation of the Karnataka Land Regulations Act, 1964, Nanaiah was of the opinion that since the issue was decided in 1996 by the State Cabinet and a circular was sent to the then DC to act upon the cabinet decision, the conservator of forests has no power to advice the DC. Nanaiah urged the DC to ignore the letter. Nanaiah also urged the Chief Minister not to resort to power cuts in Kodagu since there are no big industries or business establishments and power consumption is at a minimum. Give farmers permission to shoot rogue elephants – MCNTuesday, July 20th, 2010Speaking during the zero hour in the Legislative Council, M.C. Nanaiah requested the Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, that permission be granted to shoot rogue elephants. The CM inhis reply said that shooting rogue elephants is not the solution to the problem, instead , they would be radio-collared and translocated. Rogue elephants have become a menace to the rural populace and by radio-collaring, movement of elephants can be tracked and danger averted, the CM hoped. Yeddyurappa said that the recent elephant census had shown that the State had the maximum number of elephants in the wild . The CM also said that frequent attacks by elephants was a cause for worry. By radio-collaring these rogue elephants, they could be easily tracked and shifted, if necessary, to other interior parts of the forests. The CM also said other measures like digging of elephant trenches, erection of solar-powered electric fence will be put in place in various wildlife and reserve forests. He said that water bodies would be constructed in all the forest areas so that water will be available for elephants through-out the year. Local teams have also been formed to chase elephants if they strayed near human habitations. Karnataka Forest Department’s initiative to radio-collar rogue elephants involves implanting GSM-enabled microchips in 20 wild elephants over a span of two years, enabling officials to track their movements so that any incursions into human habitats and farmlands could be averted. But several forest officers, whom we spoke to, said this was not an easy task and was time-consuming.
The success of radio-collaring project, however, will depend on the response from its counterpart in Kerala. The Bandipur Project Tiger National Park in Chamarajanagar district is contiguous with Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu, which in turn is contiguous to Waynad Wildlife Sanctuary. Boost for Tourism in CoorgFriday, July 2nd, 2010Tourism Secretary Jyothiramalingam has said that 11 tourism projects worth Rs. 2.59 crores are in progress in Kodagu. When he made the statement at a meeting with officials, MLC M.C. Nanaiah and MLA Appachu Ranjan said as Kodagu is rich in greenery, the tourism department should ensure that new projects do not affect the environment. The projects include Maletirike Hill at Virajpet, trekking at Nagarahole, view points at Kotebetta and a bridge at Hattihole. Jyothiramalingam urged the district administration to complete the works at the earliest. He said the tourism department lacked sufficient staff and that the vacant posts would soon be filled. Nanaiah accuses Bopaiah of breaching ProtocolMonday, June 7th, 2010JDS MLA M C Nanaiah has accused the speaker of state assembly K G Bopaiah of breaching the state protocol and embarassing the elected representatives of the district by not inviting them to the inauguration ceremony of Makkuta-Virajpet road. The Rs 28 crore Makutta-Kerala road was inaugurated by K G Bopaiah on Saturday. Congress legislatures, M P Vishwanath and MLC T John were also not invited for the function, including MLC M C Nanaiah. Congress members had raised objection during the function and had complained that the government function is being held as BJP function. Nanaiah further added that Bopaiah is well versed with the state protocol, but has been regularly ignoring to pass on invitations to elected representatives of other parties and making the state function look like a single political party function.
