The hockey team of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Kodagu Vidyalaya participated in the South Zone Hockey Tournament organized by the C.B.S.E. Board in the under 14 category at Chennai and emerged winners in the South Zone category and were selected to participate in the National Level Hockey Tournament held at Rampur, U.P from 7th to 11th Nov 2010. Nanjesh Gowda M.R was adjudged player of the tournament. In the National tournament they emerged runners up to Springdale Amritsar, defeating ten teams, from all four zones.

The sixth edition of the “Sakhamuri Cup Golf Championship” which was conducted by Mercara Downs Golf Club (M.D.G.C.), concluded successfully on Sunday the 24th October 2010. Seventy five Golfers from Bangalore and Kodagu participated in this popular tournament. On 23rd October 2010 M.D.G.C. played against the renowned Pinseekers from Bangalore, at the Tata Coffee Golf Course, Pollibetta. M.D.G.C. emerged victorious in a closely contested duel. The results of Sunday’s event’s are as follows.

National Level River Rafting competition to be organised at Barapole

MLA Appachu Ranjan  said that a National level  river rafting competetion will be organised at Barapole in South Kodagu soon.

Speaking after inugurating the slush fest  at Kaggodlu near Madikeri on Saturday, organised jointly by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Youth Service and Sports Department, Youth Hostel Association of India, Youth Organisations Federation,  he further added that the Government has released additional funds to encourage sports in the district.

A sum of 10 lakhs has been released for the development of an outdoor, and indoor stadium, synthetic athletic track at Koodige, synthetic track at Ponnampet and for the construction of a Yuva Bhavan.

Madanda P  Thimmaiah has been selected to represent India in Rugby at the Commonwealth games2010 in New Delhi  Thimmaiah has completed his training with the team in Pune and is  currently touring Turkey, South africa and England with the National squad, in prepration for the Commonwealth Games.

State level slush fest / Kesaru Gadde Oota on August 7th

The Kodagu District Youth Federation in association with the Nehru Yuva Kendra, Department of Youth Services and Sports and the Youth Hostel Association of India will conduct a state-level slush fest (Kesaru Gadde Oota) at Kaggodlu in Madikeri taluk on August 7th, stated a press release issued by the Federation.

MLC M.C. Nanaiah will inaugurate the event and MLA Appachu Ranjan will preside over the programme, the release added.

ZP standing committee Chairman on education and health A. Manu Muthappa, ZP member Susheela Lokaiah, TP member T. Shobha Mohan and others will be the Chief Guest. Speaker K.G. Bopaiah will take part in the valedictory programme. This time the organisers have planned a competition of traditional Kodava Vallaga, the release said.

Rohan Bopanna and partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi bowed out of the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Wednesday, going down in straight sets to the Austrian-German duo of Juergen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner.

The Indo-Pak men’s doubles tandem, which had surged through the earlier rounds, were halted in their tracks by the superior skills and fitness of Melzer and Petzschner, who won 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

Palanganda win on Amar Aiyamma’s Hatrick

Palanganda family scored 4 – 2 to win the current edition of hockey festival, the Manayepanda Cup.
Amar Aiyamma scored a hatrick for  his family to a comfortable victory over Mukkatira(Bonda),  yesterday.
For Mukkatira, Mohan & Poonacha scored 1 each in a well fought match.

Previously Aiyamma’s 4 goals against Mookonda helped the Palanganda to storm into quater finals.
Against Ballachanda his 6 goal rampage is one of the most remembered.

The Mukkatira players also have been in splendid form in the current edition. This is the first time that Mukkatira family has entered the finals.

Nellamakkada defeated Koothanda 4-0 to claim the third place.

Palanganda: 4 (Amar Aiyamma 13th, 34th, 47th, Ajay 66th) beat Mukkatira (Bonda): 2 (Mohan 16th, Poonacha 58th) .
